The worst Mazda MX-5 front sill ever

If you know anything about the Mazda MX-5 NA, which is the Mk1 car made from 1989 to 1997, it's likely to be that it's rather prone to rusting along the sills. So it's one of the first things you should look at if you're considering buying this modern classic.

This one, at Yorkshire Car Restoration, is in a particularly poor state. Cue plenty of cutting, to get rid of the tin worm, and the fabrication of new parts. This is the first video of a three-parter.

Edd China

Watch this forklift engine come back from the dead!

Edd's forklift truck has had a hard life, unsurprisingly, because LPG isn't kind to engines' innards. As a result, it needs new liners. Before that happens, the cylinders need to be rebored, as Edd explains.

"The process of pressing in new liners involves boring but isn't actually boring to watch. It's really very interesting indeed. Let's hope the block is in good enough condition to be machined. Although re-lining an engine block is a simple enough process it is actually quite involved as it is all about accuracy and precision engineering."

The guys at Classic & Modern Engine Services clearly know their stuff, and it's good to see younger engineers at work, which bodes well for those of us who want to keep internal combustion engines on the road (and elsewhere!).

A CD Player for Your Car?!

How do you listen to your favourite music in the car these days? Do you stream it from the cloud? Play it from your phone? DAB+? FM?

In the first half of the 1980s you probably had a cassette player but that was about to change with the advent of the in-car CD player. As revealed here by BBC Tomorrow's World's Peter Macann, Sony had perfected a portable Discman system that could be taken with you, and this was adapted for use in vehicles. Peter demonstrates it here by driving a Jag XJS over some speed bumps – in the studio!
