Your Repairs: April Highlights

5 minute read

Repairs may seem daunting at first, but with the right guidance, customers like you are proving that almost any job is achievable at home. From tricky electrical faults to stubborn suspension issues, real owners are taking control, saving money, and gaining confidence along the way. Here are a few stories from the past month that show just how far a Haynes Manual can take you.

Tracking Down a CAN Bus Fault at Home

Electrical issues can be some of the most frustrating problems to deal with, especially when they’re buried deep behind your dashboard. For Chris, that’s exactly what he was up against with his 2007 Land Rover Discovery 3. The Problem? A CAN bus fault. Modern vehicles rely on complex communication systems to keep everything running smoothly. When something goes wrong, it’s not always obvious where the issue starts. To track down the issue, Chris needed to access wiring hidden behind the dashboard, no small task on a vehicle like the Discovery 3. This meant carefully removing large sections of the interior just to begin identifying the root cause.

With the help of a Haynes manual, Chris was able to confidently start dismantling the dashboard and trace the faulty wiring. Instead of guessing or risking damage, he had step-by-step guidance to support the process. ‘It was extremely helpful with getting half of the dashboard out to chase the faulty wiring, thank you!’.

Chris documented his Haynes-inspired CAN bus repair on his Youtube Channel 'Final Drive' along with plenty more brilliant repair content.

From a Frustrating Starter to a Full DIY Overhaul

For Osamah, a recurring starter problem on his 2012 Honda Accord 2.4L became the push he needed to take car repairs into his own hands. The Problem? A starter that kept failing. After two aftermarket starters failed over six years, Osamah decided it was time to tackle the original starter himself. With the help of Haynes, he successfully rebuilt the starter. But reinstalling it meant removing the intake manifold, and that’s when one job turned into many.

While working on the engine bay, Osamah took the opportunity to fix a damaged hose and broken fuse box cover, clean the intake manifold and throttle body and relearned the throttle body procedure. Each step built his confidence and skill for even bigger maintenance tasks. Osamah was able to complete a full major service, including spark plugs, fuel filter, and serpentine belt, all with his own two hands. The car runs perfectly, and he’s now ready for the next DIY challenge: front brake pads and rotors.

‘Going from relying on mechanics to executing a multi-step overhaul myself is a feeling like no other’.

Great Job, Osamah!

Gaining the Confidence to Tackle DIY Repairs

Suspension issues can be some of the most frustrating problems to deal with, made even more tricky when garages don’t quite get it right. For Jon, that’s exactly what he was up against with his 2018 Volvo V40 Cross Country. The Problem? A snapped spring and a persistent knocking. After a spring snapped in the cold weather, a local garage replaced it. But a knocking noise persisted even after the top bearing was repaired. ‘It still knocked after collection, so I thought it was the shock absorber,’ Jon explains. ‘After being messed about for a few weeks saying the parts weren’t available, I turned to Haynes and bought the manual for the car’. With 11 years since his last car repair, and experience only with older classics, Jon felt unsure, but a Haynes manual gave him the confidence he needed. “Haynes gave me confidence to source the right parts and attempt the repair myself,” he says. Crucially, the manual guided him through removing the spring safely and reassembling everything with the correct torque settings.

The Result? ‘The car runs without a knock now, and I just wish I had the confidence earlier to repair the spring myself instead of using a garage… Thanks Haynes’.

Great job, Jon! We’re delighted you’ve made your DIY comeback!
