SOHC engines

1 Release the securing clips and remove the cover from the top of the engine
2a Undo these three retaining screws...
2b ...release the retaining clip (arrowed)...
2c ...then withdraw the upper housing from the air filter element
3 Lift and remove the air filter element from the lower housing
4 Wipe clean the inner surfaces of the cover and main housing, then locate the new element in the housing, making sure that the sealing lip is correctly engaged around the edge of the housing
5 Refit the filter cover, ensuring the rear edge of the cover engages correctly with the rear of the filter housing. Tighten the securing screws and secure the retaining clip on the side of the filter housing
6 When completed, refit the trim cover to the top of the engine

DOHC engines

1 Pull the plastic cover upwards from the top of the engine
2a Slacken the air cleaner retaining clip (arrowed)…
2b … and the retaining clip (arrowed) on the turbo…
2c …release the securing clip…
2d …and remove the air intake hose
3 Disconnect the wiring plug connector from the mass airflow sensor
4a Release these two locking clips (arrowed)…
4b … and move the fuel priming pump to one side to access the air filter cover retaining screws
5a Undo the air filter cleaner retaining screws (arrowed)…
5b … and remove the upper housing
6 Note which way round the air filter element is fitted, and then lift it out from the housing
7 Wipe clean the inner surfaces of the cover and main housing, then locate the new element in the housing, making sure that the sealing lip is correctly engaged with the edge of the housing
8 Refit the filter cover/intake ducting assembly, ensuring the rear edge of the cover engages correctly with the rear of the filter housing
9 Connect the wiring plug to the airflow sensor, and then refit the plastic cover to the top of the engine
